Marketing Studies:
Overview:

The importance of Marketing as a business tool or function is yet to be fully appreciated, especially at the grassroots of commerce. Perhaps due to its broad and pervading nature in organisation, many small business entrepreneurs without marketing training, have difficulty conceptualising as well as using marketing tools effectively to improve their business competitiveness. To many people marketing is all about advertising and selling. Whereas these are aspects of the subject, marketing is far more complex, sophisticated and embracing than a limited articulation may capture. Moreover, to some marketing is perceived as ‘a con’, ‘trick’, big business tool for exploiting the poor masses in order to 'enrich their pockets'. These are very serious misconceptions indeed.

Marketing is not a new invention and certainly not the exclusive tool of big businesses to ‘con’ or ‘trick’ the masses. Every one does Marketing in one form or another. Every business starts with an idea. And ideas represent either a product or service. For there to be a business there must be someone who has a need for the product or service. There must be values which the product or service will satisfy through the benefits or solutions it delivers to the target buyer. In essence, no business whether micro, small or big will ever start without a product or service, on one hand. Whilst on the other, without a buyer or potential buyer.

This is suggesting that, right from the time the product or service idea is conceived, the process of Marketing has kicked in. The challenge from then on, is how to organise and develop the process. Like any other subject, Marketing has its own philosophical dimensions, constituents, functions and tools.

The overall aim of our Marketing courses is to teach learners what Marketing is, how to use it as a practical tool for planning their business survival, growth and expansion. In so doing the particular circumstances in each phase of the business development is taken into consideration and the Marketing features structured to enunciate the solution aspired.

As a result of the pivotal nature of some units in the Marketing study programme, they (units) have been made common to all the levels (from certificate to advanced diploma). However exemptions may be gained where units have been satisfactorily completed in preceding programme.
