Management Studies:

Overview:

Management is sometimes misunderstood as only relevant to those in a leadership position. Whereas in other times some people hold the view that if you do not own a big business, what do you need management for? Moreover, that management is the task of people who control huge budgets and run big corporate organisations. Spectacularly, others contend that if you are only a micro or small business person, what do you need management for? And furthermore, that what is important is selling not management. Such school of thought also tend to argue that their business ran into trouble because they did not have the money to ‘put in it’ (that is, buy more stocks). Additionally, that if management is required their accountant will do it. It is also not unusual for this category of entrepreneurs or proprietors to exert that, they know what to do, all that is required is capital and everything will be fine. Among such proprietors, some appear to suggest that, management means ‘second best’, 'rationing'. And that it is ‘what poor people do to survive and 'get-by' because they are deprived and have no choice’. Moreover, that 'management is unnecessary when everything is ok'.
What the above assertions tend to be suggesting is the prevalent poverty in understanding and lack of awareness of what management is. This is particularly so at the grassroots of commerce, albeit not exclusively. It is not uncommon to find situations at this level where, even those already engaged in some business activities are both unclear and unaware of:

• what exactly management is,
• its relevance to what they do,
• their roles as owner managers,
• the knowledge and skills required,
• how management is important in dealing with people (staff, suppliers, public),
• how management can help their business to be more competitive, exploit the opportunities in their environments,
• how management can help them adapt and position their businesses more effectively and strategically in changing situations,
• the role of management in communicating more effectively, cultivating customer loyalty, increasing market share, surviving, growing and expanding their businesses.

The fact that management pervades every human activity is yet to be fully understood. In essence whether in business or not everyone does management and management is relevant from waking time in the morning to retiring time at night.
